Public hearing 24: The experience of children and young people with disability in different education settings

This Public hearing was held in the Australian Capital Territory (Public hearing 24) at Rydges Canberra, 17 Canberra Avenue, Forrest. This hearing was open to the public and was livestreamed on our website.

This hearing focused on the experiences of children and young people with disability across different school settings, including special education settings.

The Royal Commission heard from young people and their families about:

• how and why decisions are made about different education options

• the key transition points and pathways across their education

• the provision of support in different education settings.

The Royal Commission heard from the young people and their families and from advocates about the effects on the life course of students with disability in special education settings, supports for students with disability and advancing the rights of children and young persons with disability in education. Representatives from education authorities gave evidence about the education options and special education settings for children and young people with disability in Western Australia and South Australia.

This hearing will build on the Royal Commission’s previous Public hearing 2 and Public hearing 7 on education for people with disability.
