The Disability Royal Commission was established in April 2019 in response to community concern about widespread reports of violence against, and the neglect, abuse and exploitation of, people with disability. These incidents might have happened recently or a long time ago.

Ms Bennett brings to the Commission some 20 years' experience at senior levels in the Commonwealth Public Service. She has held senior positions at both the Department of Social Services and Department of Human Services, overseeing the development of policy and programs to support families, children, family safety, multicultural affairs and settlement services.

The Royal Commission has made 222 recommendations on how to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to ensure a more inclusive and just society that supports the independence of people with disability and their right to live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

On Tuesday 18 June 2019, Commissioners of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability welcomed disability advocates from across Australia to the Commission's first workshop in Melbourne.
