Continuing its commitment to consulting extensively, the Disability Royal Commission held a workshop with Disability Services Providers in Melbourne on 18 July 2019.

The Workshop was conducted by Commissioner Galbally and attended by Commissioner Ryan and Commissioner McEwin.

The Chair of the Commission, the Hon Ronald Sackville AO QC, prepared a statement for the Workshop to explain his absence. The statement is as follows:

As you know the Chair of the Royal Commission, Ronald Sackville AO QC, invited you to attend this Workshop and indicated that he would also participate in the Workshop. This statement gives the reason for his absence today.

As the Royal Commission is in its early stages no decisions have been made as to the scope or nature of investigations that will be undertaken. After careful consideration, the Chair has taken the view that he should not participate in today’s Workshop. He has made this decision in order to avoid the possibility, however remote, that a further investigation or future hearing of the Commission might be compromised by his presence at the Workshop.

The Chair stresses that this is not a reflection on any of the participants in today’s Workshop. It is simply a prudent precaution he considers appropriate to ensure that the Commission discharges its important functions without distractions.

Further information from the workshop, including observations, will be published on this website in the future.
