Joanna Agius is a Deaf and a proud Narungga woman with connections to Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Wirungu nations in South Australia.

As a strong advocate for Deaf or hard of hearing Indigenous in Australia, Joanna started her career as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Indigenous people in Adelaide.

In 2005, Joanna started teaching basic Auslan courses and decided to further her studies at La Trobe University in Language Other Than English (LOTE) – Auslan. Joanna then moved to Sydney and taught Auslan.

Previously, Joanna was the Aboriginal acting coordinator to deliver ‘Signing Art’ program for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Indigenous throughout Australia.

Currently Joanna resides in Adelaide, delivering Auslan courses to students at TAFE SA. In the beginning of 2020, Joanna was awarded the Order Medal of Australia (OAM) for service to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, and to the Indigenous community.
